Hadar and White claim Salomon rails crowns at Honda session at Vail
HADAR AND WHITE CLAIM SALOMON RAILS CROWNS AT 2006 HONDA SESSION INVITATIONAL SNOWBOARD EVENT IN VAIL
VAIL, Colorado—California's snowboard phenom Shaun White maintained his stranglehold on the top step of the Honda Session podium, while Utah's Laura Hadar claimed top honors for the ladies as the two posted wins in the Slalom Rails competition Friday night at Vail Mountain's Golden Peak at the 2006 Honda Session invitational snowboard event.
Hadar literally and figuratively went over, under and through the women's field en route to the win, flying over the top of quarter pipe atop the rails configuration and into the photographers on one run, while finding an unceremonious seat on the lip of the quarter pipe on another attempt.
The M4 rider from Park City collected a total of $6,000 during the women's one-hour rails session, while last year's champion, Californian Molly Aguirre, picked up the runner-up spot with $3,500. Third place honors went to Canada's Marie-France Roy.
White, already qualified as a member of the U.S. Snowboard team for the 2006 Olympics, collected a total of $9,500 during the hour and a half rails session, which features cash payouts for the top performers every 15 minutes.
Unlike 2005, when the Carlsbad native found himself out of the money in the first half hour of the rails session, White set the pace from the outset, running first as defending champion and setting the tempo for the remainder of the evening.
Wyoming's Travis Rice spun his way into the second spot, collecting a total of $4,350, while a late addition to the competition, Boulder's Pat Milbery placed third with $2,600.
In addition to their cash winnings for the rails competition, Hadar and Milbery also earned the $1,500 prize for best trick performed during the evening. Dubbed the "Malay Factor", the award is named in memory of Vail snowboarder Josh Malay, who passed away in February of 2004 while filming a snowboard movie in Spain.
The 2006 Honda Session continues Saturday evening, January 14, with a free concert with West Coast funk rappers Digital Underground at 5 p.m. at Golden Peak and the Bud Light Men's Slopestyle Finals at 6:15 p.m.
